How Window Selection and Installation can Contribute to Passive Solar Design

One of the easiest ways to achieve passive design is through proper window installation. As windows play a crucial role in passive design, the choice was made to use thermally broken aluminium windows with double glazing. North facing windows were chosen with a high solar gain to bring in the winter sun, while east and west-facing windows have a lower solar heat gain to minimise summer morning and afternoon heating. All the glazing is double glazed, with a Low-E coating and argon gas inside. This allowed for proper ventilation and insulation on any given season, achieving maximum comfort for our homeowners without any additional use from their heaters or air conditioners.
